What plastics are promotional ballpoint pens most often made from?
The most widely used materials are ABS plastic and polystyrene — both are rigid, hold their shape well and allow for high-quality printing. Cheaper models use polypropylene (PP). For eco-focused campaigns we offer pens made from recycled ABS, rPET (recycled PET bottles) or PLA bioplastic derived from corn. Each material has different haptic properties and durability, so entry-level plastic pens remain a very accessible option for large-scale giveaways.
What is the difference between ABS and PP plastic in ballpoint pens?
ABS plastic is harder, comes with a matte or glossy finish, holds its shape better and is more scratch-resistant. Its smooth surface takes pad printing and UV printing very well. Polypropylene (PP) is softer and lighter, often perceived as a lower-tier material, but it is more economical. For mid- and high-tier corporate gifts we recommend ABS; for mass giveaways at events PP is perfectly sufficient.
Which printing technology works best for plastic ballpoint pens?
Plastic pens are most commonly printed with single- or multi-colour pad printing, or with the more modern UV digital technology, which enables full-colour printing including gradients, photographs and fine details. Pad printing is a traditional, cost-effective method that works reliably even on the curved surface of a pen. UV printing is a newer solution for more demanding artwork. Laser engraving is not used on plastics — unlike metal, the burning process produces a dirty, dark mark.
How many logo colours can be printed on a plastic ballpoint pen?
With pad printing we can print single- or multi-colour logos — each additional colour means a separate pass through the machine and slightly longer production. Pad printing works best with simple logos and solid Pantone colours. UV digital technology prints in full colour (CMYK) in a single pass, so the number of colours does not affect price or lead time. If your logo includes a gradient, photograph, shadow or fine detail, we clearly recommend UV printing.
Will an affordable plastic ballpoint pen last through long-term use?
With quality plastic pens made from ABS or polystyrene the refill typically writes 800 to 1,500 metres, which is enough for several months of daily use. Studies show that a single promotional pen has on average 3 to 5 owners during its lifetime, because it gets passed on, left in offices and cars. Even an entry-level promotional pen carries your logo for many months and reaches more people than just the original recipient.
Can a plastic ballpoint pen be combined with a touchscreen stylus for phones and tablets?
Yes, we offer pens with an integrated stylus — a conductive rubber tip on the opposite end of the pen lets you operate the touchscreens of smartphones and tablets. These models are popular with IT companies, insurance providers, banks and generally anywhere employees work with tablets. The cost is only marginally higher than for a regular pen — you essentially get two functions in a single promotional item.
